Counting Crows Frontman Adam Duritz and Broken Lizard Team For ‘Freeloaders’

November 14th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Adam DuritzWhat happens when you pair a Broken Lizard and a Counting Crow? A big screen comedy! Variety reports that Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz is teaming with the comedy troupe behind “Beerfest” and “Club Dread” to produce the indie comedy “Freeloaders.” The script has a rock star pedigree also, with director Dan Rosen co-writing the flick with Gigolo Aunts’ Dave Gibbs.

Not surprisingly, the story is themed around a rock star — or more specifically, his mansion, where five guys and one girl have taken up permanent partying residence. But their comfy lifestyle is threatened when the rock star decides to sell his house. What crazy hijinks will occur? Will they sabotage the sale? Come up with weird ways to raise money to buy the mansion themselves? Find another rock star to move in with?

This is actually Duritz’s third outing as a producer — his first two films have been dark and edgy. His first, “The Locusts,” actually starred the likes of Vince Vaughn, Ashley Judd, and Paul Rudd. This is the first film he’s tackled in ten years, so he’s obviously not interested in abandoning music for movies. But hey, it’s nice to know he’s got a backup career lined up for when being a rock star becomes utterly boring.

Speak up, Broken Lizard and Counting Crows fans…does this sound like something up your alley? Chime in below!

Ridley Scott Passes Go, Collects $200 To Direct ‘Monopoly’

November 14th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Monopoly (Hasbro)You might suffer a bit of a headache trying to puzzle out which part of this story is stranger — the fact that Universal is going ahead with a movie based on a board game, or who’s directing it. Because The Hollywood Reporter has just announced that Ridley Scott is officially on board to direct “Monopoly” for the studio. Pamela Pettler (”The Corpse Bride, “Monster House”) has been brought on board to write the screenplay, and has the tough task of shaping a narrative out of the real estate game play.

Crazily enough, “Monopoly” is one of several Hasbro games being adapted by Universal. They’re also developing “Quiji Board” and “Battleship,” and it’s only a matter of time before we get “Candyland.”

But back to Scott and “Monopoly.” The director is looking to give the movie a “futuristic sheen” along the lines of his iconic “Blade Runner.” But unfortunately, imagining that only makes you wonder what the heck the director of something so brilliant as “Blade Runner” sees in a board game adaptation. Then again, we all kind of snickered at the idea of movies based on Disney rides, and that whole “Pirates of the Caribbean” thing turned out all right. But it’s difficult to get past memories of hotels on Boardwalk, and fights over who gets to play with the pewter dog and who is stuck being the top hat.

Well, readers — do you think Scott is the director to pull off a “Monopoly” movie? Or do you think board games should be left for rainy days and power outages, and away from the big screen?

Danny Boyle On ‘28 Months Later’: It’s Not Called ‘28 Months Later’!

November 14th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Danny BoyleRecently, reports spread across the net that “Slumdog Millionaire” helmer Danny Boyle was considering hopping back into the saddle to direct “28 Months Later,” the second sequel to his smash 2002 film about a viral outbreak and its devastating consequences.

True enough, Boyle told MTV News, re-iterating what he told us back in September.

Only, seriously people, Boyle laughed, stop calling it “28 Months Later”!

“It don’t think it will be called ‘28 Months Later,’ that’s all I can say,” Boyle insisted of the sequel, remaining maddeningly coy on other details.

The first film in the series explored the aftereffects of a viral outbreak on London. The second film focused on what happened when the military tried to repopulate the area after presumably containing the threat. The third film? Who knows, Boyle said, revealing that he has an idea but that nothing is set in stone.

“I mean, it’s absolutely not written yet, but there’s a prospect of an idea and the way these ideas start is you just suddenly get a little glimpse,” Boyle confessed.

What else? Not to go all Columbo on you here at the end, but Boyle, well, he does have just one more thing he wants from you: for the love of all that is holy, stop calling his infected monsters zombies.

“There was an article in the paper the other day by Simon Pegg. He wrote this article begging people to let zombies stumble again and not run. He was trying to turn the tide back because everyone has zombies running now. He’s like, ‘No, please. Can we go back to the old days when you knew you could get away from them?’ That was sort of the thrill. These idiots didn’t lock themselves in car and died,” Boyle laughed. “That’s why I keep saying, ‘It’s not a zombie movie, everyone. It’s not a zombie movie!’ Because the aficionados - it’s sacrilegious what you’re doing by changing things like that. They’re infected. They’re not zombies.”

Should “Untitled Boyle Infection Movie” pick up right from the last film, with a global pandemic? Or should it stay small? Would you want Boyle to sit in the director’s chair once more? Sound off on all your thoughts below.

Jim Caviezel And Samuel L. Jackson Are ‘Blown’ Away

November 14th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Samuel L. JacksonJim Caviezel and Samuel L. Jackson have played some pretty weighty roles — the former as none other than Jesus Christ, and Samuel L. Jackson as … well, everyone else. So it’s about time they starred onscreen together, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s precisely what they’re going to do for ‘Blown.” The film will be directed by Martha Fiennes, sister of Ralph.

Caviezel will play Will Matlock, a top MI5 agent who’s spending just another day at the office investigating a global corporation, uncovers an imminent terrorist attack. It’s not just any terrorist attack — a plot to destroy the entire city of London. The man behind it? Samuel L. Jackson, who will be playing the attack’s mastermind, Julius Lezard. (Jackson must have a contract that stipulates his characters have the coolest names in film.)

Lezard engages poor Matlock in a high-stakes game of wit and deception — not, as you might expect, a fight to see just who is the biggest badass.

It’s tempting to actually view this film as a fanmade project that pits Mace Windu against Jesus, or Caviezel’s alien “Outlander” warrior versus Jules Winnfield. But with a Fiennes at the helm, it’s bound to be classier than that. It looks like we’ll be in for a fun, fierce battle for London, though — and with this cast, it’s not easy to predict who will win the fight.

Neil Gaiman, Penn Jillette To Adapt WWI-Era Prisoner Tale ‘The Road To Endor’

November 14th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Neil GaimanFROM SPLASH PAGE: So comic book author and novelist Neil Gaiman isn’t adapting Charles Burns’ “Black Hole” — but what is he adapting, then, from the pool of works not his own? (Besides “Fermata,” that is).

Gaiman’s teamed up with Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) for “The Road to Endor” (and no, it has nothing to do with Star Wars). Written by EH Jones, it’s a true story of two World War I prisoners of war, one of whom was an amateur magician, who trick their guards into believing that they are in touch with the spirit world to plot their escape from a Turkish prison camp. Using Ouija boards, séances, mentalist scams, poltergeist effects, and fake suicides, they convince even the Camp Commander.

Will Smith Enlists Son Jaden For ‘Karate Kid’ Remake

November 12th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Will and Jaden SmithI think it’s official — if you were old enough to see “The Karate Kid” in theaters, Hollywood considers you ancient news, and your childhood memories up for grabs. It’s the latest 80s movie to get the remake treatment, following in the wake of proposed updates of “Short Circuit,” “Footloose,” “Red Dawn,” and “The Last Starfighter.”

According to Variety, Jaden Smith, son of Will, is set to star as the next crane-kicking Karate Kid, confirming rumors that have swirled since September. The movie will be produced by Overbrook Entertainment, Smith’s production shingle. No director has been named, but Chris Murphy is penning the script.

This “Karate Kid” will be decidedly more exotic. Rather than being set in sunny California, the film will be shot in Beijing and other foreign cities.

It’s not clear what an American kid is doing in China, but I’m sure there’s a reason other than the cool architecture. Otherwise, the story will borrow from the original, where a bullied kid meets a wise mentor, who teaches him to stand up for himself using martial arts. The younger Smith is already a practitioner of martial arts, so he’ll be able to truly kick some Cobra Kai butt.

While it’s certainly the coolest role a kid like Smith could land, it feels very weird and wrong to remake this. The original is downright iconic, and such a product of the 80s, when everything Asian was cool and new. Karate was all we thought of back then (that and how amazing neon was), and I’m sure more than one of you shattered an ankle trying to do a crane kick off a chair. Still, everything that is old is new again, but I feel like checking into a nursing home already.

Does the news of a “Karate Kid” remake bother you, MTV readers? Or do you think Jaden Smith should take Ralph Macchio to the mat, and make it his own?

‘Ugly Betty’ Star America Ferrera Is An ‘American Tragic’

November 12th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

America FerreraIt’s easy to remember the name of America Ferrera’s new drama. Variety reports that she is set to star and produce the indie drama “American Tragic” for Latino mini-studio Maya Entertainment. Ryan Piers Williams will be directing the film from his own screenplay.

“Tragic” centers on a young war veteran, who will be played by newcomer Ryan O’Nan, who sets off across the country with a buddy in order to find a little peace and redemption. Ferrera will play his wife, and Melissa Leo will play his mother. You always have to leave girls behind when on a cross-country trip!

This is Ferrera’s second collaboration with Maya Entertainment, who also produced and distributed her film, “How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer,” which she made shortly before becoming a household name with “Ugly Betty.” I think it’s pretty cool that in the wake of stardom, Ferrera has largely steered clear of big Hollywood films, choosing to showcase her talent in indie films. Plus, she’s using her name to help boost the first studio owned and operated by Latinos. Right now, she’s anything but tragic.

Readers, do you wish America Ferrera would take on a big-budget, A-list role? Or are you a fan of her quiet independent work?

‘Twilight’ Stars Have Hollywood At Their Feet - But Are They Mark Hamills Or Harrison Fords?

November 12th, 2008 admin Posted in DVD, Movie No Comments »

Twelve months ago they were hardly household names, probably best known as “the ‘Harry Potter’ kid” and “that little girl from ‘Panic Room.’ ” Now they’re two of the hottest young stars in Hollywood, causing riots and fan shrieking every time they go out in public.

Welcome to the A-list, Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson.

This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday focuses on the 18-year-old actress who portrays Bella Swan, and our 10 Days of “Twilight” series recently gave fans their latest interview with the fun-loving heartthrob otherwise known as Edward Cullen. When we asked the duo to reflect on their caterpillar-to-butterfly transformations of 2008, both pointed to the same fringe benefit: getting better movies made. (Read more about how “Twilight” has already changed the careers of Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the MTV Movies Blog.)

“I’ve been so busy compared to last year, when I wasn’t busy at all,” explained Pattinson, who insists that his heart is with smaller, more tender fare like “Little Ashes,” which he’ll release next year. “I’m vaguely more commercially viable, so people want to have meetings with you instead of not wanting to have meetings with you.”

“[My life] hasn’t changed personally,” insisted Stewart, who has always tried to balance her blockbusters with smaller films like “In the Land of Women” and the upcoming “Yellow Handkerchief.” “I’m kinda tripping out [professionally], because I’ve always been in a position where I love films, and they don’t have money, and I’m attached to them forever — and I just get too old or uninterested in them. I don’t get to realize some of the parts that I would love to play. But now I can get projects off the ground; I can get them made.”

“It’s very strange constantly working and doing various things,” grinned Pattinson, who finds himself steadily employed for the first time in his career. “That’s basically how my life has changed.”

OK, everybody, here’s your “Twilight” Tuesday question of the week: If Stephenie Meyer’s massive franchise is the “Star Wars” of this generation, which of the actors will become Mark Hamills (one hit series and that’s it), which will be Carrie Fishers (a few memorable roles, but never able to escape being typecast), and which will become Harrison Fords (massive stars for the next several decades)?
